In 2008, Amendment 48 tried to define the term person to include a fertilized egg in our state constitution.
This Amendment was the first of its kind and was being pushed by a narrow minority with an extreme political agenda. It lost in every county in the state and 73% of voters rejected it.

Denver, CO -- The proponents of Amendment 48 claim that changing the definition of "person" in the state constitution only lays the foundation for banning abortion (even for victims of rape, incest, or to save a woman's life), banning birth control methods, and other health care services. Yet, because Colorado's constitution is self-executing, Amendment 48 would impact health care immediately. Join us on Thursday, October 2, 11:30 am, Congregation Emanuel, to hear the real consequences of Amendment 48 from women.
What: Press Conference, "Amendment 48: Real Consequences for Real Women" Where: Congregation Emanuel, 1st and Grape, Sisterhood Lounge When: Thursday, 10/2 11:30 - 12:00. Who: Young woman who uses birth control Rape survivor In vitro fertilization patient Cancer survivor Pastor Why: Amendment 48 goes far beyond sound bites and ideology. It extends into the most personal private family decisions. Amendment 48 grants full constitutional rights to fertilized eggs. If the proposed amendment passes, a fertilized egg would have the same medical and legal rights as your mother, sister, or best friend. Amendment 48 will put the government, courts, and lawyers in the middle of our most personal family medical decisions.
