Insufficient: Colorado "Personhood" Amendment Fails

Proponents Fail to Gather a Sufficient Number of Signatures to Certify for the November Ballot

Denver, CO (August 29, 2012)—Today, the Secretary of State of Colorado ruled that the proponents of the "Personhood" Amendment were 3,859 signatures short of qualifying for the general election ballot.

"Every person who refused to sign the proponents' petition stood up for Colorado families and values. The NO Personhood Campaign stands with them," said Fofi Mendez, Campaign Director, NO Personhood Campaign.

The measure has steadily lost momentum since 2008. Each year, fewer people have signed the petition to put the measure on the ballot, and Coloradans have voted against it by three-to-one margins.

"Coloradans know that politicians and the government should not be involved in a woman's personal decisions about her pregnancy. The proposed amendment was dangerous, and would lead to more intrusion into our personal lives, such as allowing the government to get into our medical records to investigate miscarriages, dictate the kinds of birth control we use, and interfere in a family's personal decisions about fertility treatments. If enacted, the 'Personhood' Amendment would have banned all abortions in Colorado, including those sought by victims of rape and incest who became pregnant by these violent acts," said Vicki Cowart, President and CEO, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains while speaking on behalf of the NO Personhood Campaign.

"Coloradans win with today's announcement from the Secretary of State. Twice voters have stopped this intrusive measure on Election Day. This year, we stopped the amendment before it even reached the ballot," said Jeremy Shaver, Executive Director, The Interfaith Alliance of Colorado. "We can personally disagree on a variety of issues, but politicians should not interfere with a woman and her family when they are making difficult, personal decisions. We know the proponents will be back again—they've promised as much. We encourage Coloradans to continue to vote for those values this November and in the future."
